Rim knobs are door knobs designed to work with surface-mounted rim locks. One knob fixes directly onto the lock face, and the other attaches to the door with visible screws.

Can I use rim knobs on internal doors?

Yes, rim knobs are commonly used on internal doors, especially in period properties, cottages, and heritage homes.

Are rim knobs suitable for external doors?

While some people do use rim knobs on external doors, there are important considerations. Rim locks are generally not insurance-rated and don’t meet British Standard security grades on their own. If you choose to fit a rim knob and rim lock on an external door, it’s strongly recommended to also install a 5 lever mortice deadlock to meet insurance requirements and improve security.

In addition, choose a durable finish, such as brass or chrome, and make sure your rim lock is weather-resistant. For coastal or exposed locations, extra care is needed. Always consult your installer for professional advice on external door security.

Can I use rim knobs with a tubular latch or mortice lock?
