What are espagnolette window handles?

Espagnolette window handles, often shortened to espag handles, are modern window handles that operate a multi-point locking mechanism along the window frame. They are commonly used on uPVC, timber and aluminium windows for improved security and a neat, contemporary look.

Are espagnolette window handles suitable for uPVC, timber and aluminium windows?

Yes. Espagnolette window handles are widely used on uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. The key is to choose the correct spindle length, fixing centres and handing so the handle matches your existing espag gearbox and window profile.

How do I know if I need a left-hand or right-hand espagnolette handle?

Stand inside the room facing the window. If the handle is on the left and the window hinges are on the right, you normally need a left-hand handle. If the handle is on the right and the hinges are on the left, you need a right-hand handle. Inline espag handles are non-handed and can suit either side in many cases.

Do espagnolette window handles come with key locking for security?

Many espagnolette window handles are key-locking as standard to help secure your home and comply with insurance requirements. Non-locking options are also available for escape windows or where key operation is not required.

Do you deliver espagnolette window handles across the UK?

Yes. Trade Door Handles supplies espagnolette window furniture nationwide across the UK, with fast delivery to areas such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and beyond from our bases in Cumbria.

Q: What is the difference between inline and offset espag handles?

Inline espag handles are straight and can usually be used on either left- or right-handed windows. Offset espag handles are cranked to one side to give extra knuckle clearance or to match existing hardware, and are supplied as left-hand or right-hand versions.

Our espagnolette window handles come in various configurations to suit different frame layouts and styles. If you're upgrading or replacing, it's essential to select the correct type:

Inline espag handles (also known as straight) are symmetrical and can be fitted either side.
Offset or cranked espag handles are handed — available in left hand or right hand versions for a better grip and clearance on certain window profiles.
Universal espag handles are straight designs that work on either side of the window.

Choose from locking or non-locking options depending on the security requirements of your room. Our selection includes 30mm and 43mm spindle lengths, commonly used on most UK uPVC and timber systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between inline and offset espag handles?

Inline handles are symmetrical and fit either side of the window. Offset (cranked) handles are handed and provide better clearance near frames.

What spindle length do I need?

30mm and 43mm are the most common sizes in the UK. Measure the spindle length from the base of the handle to the tip before ordering.

Are locking espagnolette handles more secure?

Yes, they work with a multi-point locking system and come with a key for added window security.

Do I need a left or right-handed espag handle?

If you open the window with your left hand, you need a left-hand handle. If you open with your right, go for a right-hand model — or choose a universal handle.
