From The Anvil Locks and Latches: Questions

Which lock do I need for my front door?

Most home insurers ask for a British Standard lock on external doors. A 5 lever mortice sash lock or deadlock Kitemarked to BS 3621 is the usual choice on a timber front door, often alongside a night latch, while multi-point doors use a Euro cylinder. Always check the wording of your own policy.

What is the difference between a sash lock and a deadlock?

A sash lock has a sprung latch worked by the handle as well as a key-operated bolt, so it is used with lever or knob handles. A deadlock has only the key-operated bolt, for stand-alone locking with an escutcheon and a pull handle or fixed knob.

Which lock should I use on a bathroom door?

Use a bathroom lock with bathroom lever handles and a bathroom thumbturn, or keep a standard tubular latch and add a tubular deadbolt worked by a thumbturn. From The Anvil makes both, fire tested to FD-20/30/60.

Are From The Anvil locks suitable for fire doors?

Many are. From The Anvil sash locks, deadlocks, latches and bathroom locks marked CERTIFIRE (certificate CF5531) are fire tested to FD-20/30/60 and performance tested against BS EN 12209, and FD60 intumescent packs are available for each lock type.

Buying Guide

How to Choose From The Anvil Locks and Latches

Start with the door, then choose the lock type, the case size and the finish to match your handles. These are the main things to check.

1. Internal doors: most room doors need a tubular mortice latch. Use the heavy duty latch with knob sets and unsprung levers, and add a tubular deadbolt or fit a bathroom lock where you need privacy.

2. Front and back doors: for timber doors, choose a BS3621 5 lever lock: a sash lock with lever handles, or a mortice deadlock with a pull handle, often alongside a night latch. Multi-point doors take a Euro cylinder.

3. The case size: 2 1/2 inch and 3 inch cases suit lever handles. From The Anvil recommends a 3 inch case with knob sets, or a horizontal lock to keep the knob well clear of the frame.

4. Special doors: rebated double doors need a rebate kit, pocket doors need a sliding door lock, and thin ledged doors suit a surface fixed rim lock.

5. Fire doors: choose CERTIFIRE approved locks and latches, fire tested to FD-20/30/60, with the matching FD60 intumescent pack.
