Which bolt suits an offset frame?

A cranked (necked) surface bolt. The bent throw engages the keep where the frame stands proud of the door.

Flush vs surface bolts on double doors?

Flush bolts are recessed and discreet; surface bolts remain visible and are easy to operate. Both can secure the inactive leaf top and bottom.

Is there a coastal or weather-resistant option?

Yes - 316 marine grade stainless and durable powder-coated finishes improve corrosion resistance in coastal environments.

Do I need a matched keep/strike for a surface bolt?

Yes. A matched keep/strike helps the throw locate cleanly and improves security and smooth operation, especially on frequently used doors and windows.

What's the best way to choose the right bolt size and throw?

Measure the frame/door clearance and the depth needed for the throw to engage the keep securely. If unsure, choose the bolt type first (straight, cranked, flush, or espagnolette) then match length and throw to the installation.

Window and Door Bolts

Window and Door Bolts - Secure, Discreet & Design-Led Hardware

Choose Window and Door Bolts that combine everyday security with a considered finish. Ideal for internal doors, French windows and double doors - precise throws, smooth action, and options to suit period or modern schemes.

Quick Guide: Types, Uses & Fitting

- Straight surface bolts suit flush frames for simple slide-to-lock security.
- Cranked (necked) bolts solve offset frames - bent throws engage the keep when the frame stands proud.
- Flush bolts recess into the door edge for a clean, concealed finish - popular on double doors.
- Espagnolette surface bolts secure at top and bottom via one handle for multi-point peace of mind.

Typical fixing: surface-screws through the bolt body into timber or composite, with a matched keep/strike. On double doors, fit a pair of flush door bolts to the inactive leaf (top & bottom).

Detailed Guidance & Use-Cases

Choosing the Right Window and Door Bolt

For flush frames, a straight surface bolt delivers quick, reliable locking. Where the frame is proud or offset, a cranked (necked) bolt ensures the throw meets the keep cleanly. On double doors, a pair of flush door bolts on the inactive leaf keeps lines minimal, while espagnolette surface bolts provide multi-point (top & bottom) engagement with a single handle.

Common applications include French doors, patio doors, cupboards, stable doors, and light commercial settings. Materials and finishes cover traditional and contemporary tastes: Antique Black, Beeswax, Pewter, Polished Brass, Polished Chrome, Polished Nickel, Matt Black, Matt Bronze, and 316 marine-grade stainless for coastal properties.

Technical Fit & Finish

Sizes, Throws, Keeps & Compatibility

Select bolt lengths to suit door height and required reach; longer bolts often feel smoother on tall doors and provide more leverage. Throw length should align with the keep or strike for positive engagement without binding. Use appropriate keeps (surface, mortice, floor or angle keeps) to match the door/frame situation. On timber, pre-drill for clean screw seating; on composite/metal, confirm substrate and fixings. For double doors, fit a top flush bolt into the head and a bottom flush bolt into the threshold, or choose an espagnolette surface bolt to control both points via one handle. Pair finishes to surrounding hardware (e.g., Matt Black with contemporary lever handles; Antique Pewter with cottage or barn conversions) for a cohesive look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these bolts be used externally?

What’s best for a minimal look on double doors?

Flush bolts recessed into the door edge for a clean, uninterrupted line.

What if the frame sits proud of the door?

A cranked (necked) surface bolt is designed for offset frames, ensuring the throw meets the keep reliably.
