Which brass butt hinge do I need?

As a guide, lightweight internal and cupboard doors suit 2 1/2 or 3 inch extruded hinges. Standard 35mm and 44mm internal doors are normally hung on a pair of 3 x 2 or 4 x 2 5/8 inch washered hinges, while heavy oak, hardwood and front doors should use three 4 x 3 inch washered or thrust bearing hinges. Washers and bearings reduce friction between the knuckles, giving a smoother swing and far less wear than a plain hinge.

Care tip: lacquered finishes such as polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, matt bronze and satin nickel should only be wiped with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid metal polish and aerosol cleaners, which break down the lacquer. Polished nickel is a living finish that develops a gentle patina unless buffed regularly, and natural brass is supplied unlacquered so it will darken over time.
