Locks to Match Your Door Handles

Most locks are only made in plain nickel or brass. M.Marcus locks and latches are finished to match the handles in front of them, so the edge of the door matches too. See black locks and latches for black iron and matt black handles, or York Security in antique brass, matt bronze, polished brass, satin brass, polished chrome and nickel and satin chrome and nickel.

Measuring a Replacement Lock

Measure the backset, from the door edge to the centre of the spindle or keyhole, and the faceplate size. On lock and bathroom backplates, check the centres between the spindle and the keyhole or turn: York bathroom locks have 57mm centres, and the CE bathroom lock is also made with 78mm centres. Read our guide to door lock backsets and types of door locks explained for more help.

M.Marcus Locks and Latches Questions

Do M.Marcus door handles come with a lock or latch?
No. M.Marcus and Heritage Brass handles are sold without locks or latches, so choose a latch or lock to suit the handle: latch, lock, euro or bathroom.

Which tubular latch do I need?
A standard tubular latch is lightly sprung for handles with their own return spring. Choose a heavy duty tubular latch for unsprung lever handles, mortice knobs and heavier handles. Most lever handles use a 2.5 inch latch, while mortice knobs usually need a 3 inch latch to keep your knuckles clear of the frame.

What is the difference between a bathroom lock and a bathroom deadbolt?
A mortice bathroom lock has the latch and privacy bolt in one case and suits bathroom handles on a backplate. A tubular bathroom deadbolt is a separate privacy bolt, fitted with a plain latch and a thumb turn, and suits lever handles on rose and knobs.

Which lock should I use on a front or back door?
Many home insurers ask for a BS3621 British Standard 5 lever lock on external doors. Check your own policy wording before you buy.

What does CE marked mean on a tubular latch?
CE marking means the latch has been tested and declared against the relevant European standard, which is why CE marked latches are often chosen for commercial projects and specified door sets. Always check the door manufacturer's requirements if the latch is going on a fire door.

Can I match the lock finish to my handles?
Yes. M.Marcus locks and latches are made in finishes to match Heritage Brass, including antique brass, matt bronze, polished brass, satin brass, matt black and combined chrome and nickel faceplates.

Matching a Lock or Latch to Your Door Handles

  • Latch handles on a backplate, levers on rose or knobs: a tubular latch. Use a heavy duty latch for unsprung levers and mortice knobs.
  • Lock handles with a keyhole: a 3 lever sash lock for internal doors, or a BS3621 5 lever sash lock for external doors.
  • Euro lock handles: a euro profile sash lock and a euro cylinder.
  • Bathroom handles on a backplate: a mortice bathroom lock. York bathroom locks have 57mm centres; the CE bathroom lock is also made with 78mm centres.
  • Levers on rose or knobs on a bathroom door: a plain latch, a tubular bathroom deadbolt and a matching thumb turn.
  • Front doors: a night latch, with a BS3621 deadlock below it if your insurer asks for one.

York Security and CE marked

York Security or CE Marked Latches?

York Security is the main M.Marcus lock range: tubular latches, mortice sash locks, deadlocks, bathroom locks and night latches, finished to match Heritage Brass door furniture.

CE marked tubular latches, deadbolts and bathroom locks have been tested and declared against the relevant European standard, which is why they are often chosen for commercial projects and specified door sets. Always check the door manufacturer's requirements if the latch is going on a fire door.

Replacing an existing lock? Measure the backset (door edge to the centre of the spindle or keyhole) and the faceplate size, or send us a photo of the old lock and your handles and we will check it for you.
