Double phosphor washered (DPW) hinges are the trade favourite for good quality internal doors. Two phosphor bronze washers sit between the knuckles of each hinge, so the brass leaves never grind against each other. The result is a smoother, quieter swing and a hinge that stays tight for many years longer than a plain butt hinge. HG99 or PR88 - what is the difference?

Both series are solid brass with double phosphor washers. The HG99 series has thicker leaves (up to 4.2mm on the 4 x 3 inch) and suits heavy solid timber and front doors, while the PR88 series is a slightly lighter gauge (2.5mm to 3.5mm) that is ideal for everyday internal doors and offers excellent value. For a standard 35mm internal door a pair of 3 x 2 inch hinges is usually enough; 44mm and heavier doors should use three 4 inch hinges.

Care tip: lacquered finishes such as polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, matt bronze and satin nickel should only be wiped with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid metal polish and aerosol cleaners, which break down the lacquer. Polished nickel is a living finish that develops a gentle patina unless buffed regularly, and natural brass is supplied unlacquered so it will darken over time.
