Front and external doors are heavier, thicker and used far more often than internal doors, and they are exposed to the weather. They need a heavy gauge 4 inch hinge with washers or bearings. How many hinges does a front door need?

Always fit three 4 inch hinges to a front or external door: one at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle or just below the top hinge, which carries most of the load. Note that lacquered and plated finishes used outdoors will weather over time, especially in coastal and polluted areas; regular wiping and an occasional light wax coat helps extend their life, and natural brass is a good choice if you prefer a finish that ages gracefully.

Care tip: lacquered finishes such as polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, matt bronze and satin nickel should only be wiped with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid metal polish and aerosol cleaners, which break down the lacquer. Polished nickel is a living finish that develops a gentle patina unless buffed regularly, and natural brass is supplied unlacquered so it will darken over time.
