Choosing Between Tubular, Flat & Upright Mortice Latches
The three main types of mortice latches all serve the same function – to keep an internal door closed – but are designed for different needs:
- Tubular Mortice Latches: Slim and round-ended, easy to install with minimal drilling. Best for modern internal doors. Available in backsets such as 45mm, 57mm, and 64mm. Ideal when fitting door handles on rose.
- Flat Mortice Latches: Rectangular, deeper body. Often chosen for restoration projects or heritage properties. Suitable for use with heavier knobs or rim-style door furniture.
- Upright Mortice Latches: Larger, boxier units that match the profile of a mortice sashlock (but with no lock). Used for visual consistency across doors with and without locks.
