What Are Multipoint Door Handles?
Replacement Handles for UPVC, Composite & Timber Doors
Multipoint door handles are designed specifically for use with multipoint locking systems, which are commonly found on modern UPVC, composite, and sometimes timber doors. Unlike standard door handles, which operate a single latch and deadbolt, these handles engage multiple locking points—typically at the top, middle, and bottom of the door. This not only improves home security but also enhances thermal performance by pulling the door tight against the frame for improved weather sealing.
These handles are operated by lifting the lever, which activates the hooks or bolts along the locking strip, followed by turning the key to engage the Euro profile cylinder. Most of the UK market now uses 92PZ multipoint handles (92mm from the spindle to the keyhole), which are compatible with the vast majority of door types fitted in new-builds, retrofits, and replacement projects.
You’ll see multipoint handles on front doors, back doors, side doors, French doors, and even in some commercial settings like care homes or schools where added security is required. They’re ideal for homeowners, tradespeople, property developers, and architects looking for a reliable solution that balances ease of use with a higher level of security than traditional locks alone.
Types of Multipoint Handles (92PZ, Lever/Lever Only)
Our collection includes only lever/lever multipoint handles, which are the most widely used and familiar format in the UK. These have a matching lever on both sides of the door and are commonly found on domestic entrance doors. Lever/pad handles, which use a fixed pad on the outside and a lever inside, are no longer widely requested and are not part of our offering.
Multipoint door handles also differ in how they are sprung:
- Sprung handles contain internal return springs that help the handle bounce back to its horizontal position after use. These are great when the lock mechanism is unsprung.
- Unsprung handles rely on the spring cassette within the lock body. These are common on older doors but are being phased out in favour of sprung options.
Many of our multipoint handles are universal or adjustable to fit different screw centres, but you’ll still want to check compatibility before purchasing. We also offer marine-grade 316 stainless steel for harsh environments, especially coastal areas where corrosion resistance is critical.
Finishes available include:
- Polished Chrome (classic and reflective)
- Satin Chrome (modern, brushed look)
- Polished Brass (traditional appeal)
- Antique Brass (vintage or period properties)
- Satin Nickel (sleek and neutral)
- Bronze (luxury and characterful)
- Stainless Steel (particularly 316 marine grade for external applications)
How to Measure Multipoint Door Handles
Accurate measurements are essential when choosing a replacement multipoint handle. The most important is the PZ measurement—the distance from the centre of the handle spindle to the centre of the keyhole. For most UK doors, this is 92mm, which is known as a 92PZ handle.
You’ll also need to check:
- Screw fixing centres, which vary depending on the manufacturer
- Backplate height and width, to ensure it will cover your existing holes or marks
- Spindle thickness and length, which must match your lock
If you're unsure, we recommend contacting our support team with photos or dimensions. We’ll help you identify the correct handle – especially if you’re replacing a worn or discontinued model.
Compatible Door Types – UPVC, Composite & Timber
Multipoint handles are extremely versatile and are fitted to a wide range of doors, including:
- UPVC doors – the most common use in UK homes
- Composite doors – combining insulation and aesthetic appeal
- Timber doors – where security upgrades are required or where multipoint locks have been added for extra protection
This makes them ideal for:
- Replacement on worn-out doors
- Security upgrades for older properties
- Specification in new-builds
- Public and commercial buildings including offices, schools, and care facilities
They are typically paired with Euro profile cylinders, which can be upgraded to anti-snap or high-security variants for extra peace of mind. Most come with long backplates that conceal the locking strip while keeping aesthetics clean and modern.
Alternatives and Comparisons – Choosing the Right Handle
When comparing door handle systems, it’s helpful to understand how multipoint door handles differ from traditional options:
- Multipoint vs Standard Handles: Traditional mortice handles operate a single latch or bolt. Multipoint systems secure the door at multiple positions for enhanced security and better weather sealing.
- Sprung vs Unsprung: Sprung handles offer better feel and return action, while unsprung handles rely on the lock's internal mechanism.
- 92PZ vs 70PZ: 92mm is the standard, but some older or non-standard locks use different centre measurements.
If you're searching for other options beyond multipoint, we also stock a full range of:
- Standard Locking Handles on Backplates
- Euro Profile Locking Handles
- Oval Locking Handles
- Latch Handles (non-locking)
- Bathroom Handles with turn and release
- Multipoint Locking Systems if you're installing from scratch or replacing the entire system
