How to Choose a Door Stop

1. Floor or wall: fit a floor door stop where the door opens against furniture or there is nothing to fix to on the wall. Fit a wall or skirting door stop where a stop on the floor would be in the way.

2. Check the projection: measure how far your handle sticks out from the door and choose a wall or projection stop at least that long. The 64mm size suits most doors, and the 76mm size suits deeper skirting boards.

3. Match the finish: choose the same finish as your handles and hinges. Brass door stops come in bright polished brass, brushed satin brass and antique brass, or choose chrome door stops, satin nickel, polished nickel or matt bronze.

4. Need it held open? A standard door stop only stops the door. To hold it open as well, choose the magnetic floor door stop or a gravity door holder from our Heritage Brass door holders.

More Door Stop Questions

Is a door stop the same as a door stopper?

Yes. Door stop and door stopper mean the same thing: a fitting that stops a door before the handle hits the wall. A door wedge that holds a door open is a different product.

Can I use a door stop on a fire door?

A fixed door stop that only stops the door is fine. Never use a magnetic door stop or door holder to hold a fire door open. Fire doors must be free to close unless they are fitted with an approved hold-open device linked to the fire alarm.

Will brass door stops tarnish?

Polished brass and satin brass door stops are lacquered to slow tarnishing, so wipe them with a soft damp cloth and avoid brass polish. Antique brass and matt bronze are designed to age, and polished nickel develops a gentle patina unless buffed regularly.

How are door stops fixed?

Every Heritage Brass door stop is supplied with fixing screws for timber floors, skirting boards and walls. For concrete, tiled or masonry surfaces, use a suitable wall plug or fixing.

Floor or skirting door stop for a carpeted room?

A skirting or wall door stop is usually easier in a carpeted room, as it fixes to the skirting board and nothing sits on the carpet. A floor door stop can still be used, fixed firmly through the carpet into the floor below.
