How to Choose a Door Pull Handle

A pull handle is the right choice for a door that is pushed and pulled rather than latched with a lever, such as a front door with a multipoint lock, an oak entrance door, a shop door or a barn door. Work through these four choices.

1. The style: T bar pull handles and offset T bars suit contemporary front doors and commercial entrances. Art Deco pull handles suit period and statement doors, and Blacksmith bar pull handles suit oak, cottage and barn doors.

2. The length: From The Anvil T bars come in 0.6m, 0.9m, 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m, and its bar pull handles in 400mm, 800mm and 1800mm. As a guide, choose a length in proportion to the door, with the longest bars on tall, wide or pivot doors.

3. The fixing: on the T bars, bolt fix suits doors up to 80mm thick, secret fix leaves no visible bolt on the inside, and back to back pull handles fit a handle on each side of doors up to 65mm thick. A back to back kit lets the bar pull handles be fitted to both sides of doors up to 74mm thick.

Marine grade for exposed doors: From The Anvil makes its T bar pull handles from marine grade 316 stainless steel, which it says offers unrivalled corrosion resistance. It recommends marine grade for coastal and highly polluted locations.

Solid brass Art Deco: the Art Deco pull handle is part of From The Anvil's Period collection, hand forged from solid brass, and comes face fixed or on a backplate. The pull handle on backplate is designed to match the 300mm Art Deco finger plate.
