Polished Brass Door Furniture Room by Room

The hall and front door. First impressions count, so this is where polished brass works hardest: a brass door knocker, letterbox, house numbers and centre door knob outside, with matching pull handles or knobs on the inner porch door.

Living rooms and bedrooms. Panelled internal doors suit brass mortice knobs or traditional lever handles on rose, with finger plates on the push side to save the paintwork from fingermarks.

Bathrooms and en suites. Choose a bathroom handle on a backplate, or a lever on rose with a separate bathroom thumb turn, so the door can be locked from inside and opened from outside in an emergency.

Cupboards, pantries and back doors. Use brass door bolts on garden and back doors, flush pulls on sliding and pocket doors, and door stops wherever a handle could hit a wall.

Numbers, stops, pulls and escutcheons

Getting the Details Right

House numbers. Polished brass numbers and letters come in 2 inch and 3 inch sizes, with face fix, concealed fix and self adhesive options. Larger 3 inch numbers are easier to read from the road.

Door stops. Floor door stops suit doors that open onto a clear floor, while wall and projection stops fix to the skirting or wall where a floor stop would be a trip hazard.

Pull handle length. As a rough guide, a pull of around 300mm suits a standard internal or front door, while 450mm and longer pulls look better on tall, wide or heavy doors.

Escutcheons. Match the escutcheon to the lock: standard keyhole escutcheons for lever locks, euro escutcheons for euro cylinders, and covered escutcheons to keep draughts out of a keyhole.

Near the sea? Lacquered polished brass breaks down much sooner on coastal front doors. There we recommend Grade 316 marine stainless steel or unlacquered brass. See it all at our Kendal and Carlisle showrooms.

More Polished Brass Door Furniture Questions

What is the difference between a lock and a latch handle?

A latch handle has a plain backplate for doors that only need to close. A lock handle has a keyhole in the plate, to go with a sash lock.

Do I need a euro handle or a standard lock handle?

Use a euro profile handle where the lock takes a euro cylinder, and a standard lever lock handle where the lock uses a traditional lever key.

How do I choose a centre door knob?

Choose one that suits the size and style of the door, usually fixed at the centre of the middle rail. It is for pulling the door shut and does not operate a latch.

Can I mix lever handles and mortice knobs in one house?

Yes. Many period houses use knobs on bedrooms and living rooms and levers where they are easier to use, all in the same polished brass.

Do you sell matching brass escutcheons?

Yes. Polished brass escutcheons come for standard keyholes and euro cylinders, to go with handles on rose and mortice knobs.
