Choose a Type of Door Bolt

Straight or Cranked Door Bolts?

Choose straight door bolts where the door closes flush with the frame, and cranked door bolts, also called necked bolts, where the door is rebated or sits back in the frame. For double doors, see our French door bolts.

Choose a Size

Small door bolts from 2 to 4 inch suit cupboards, cabinets and bathroom doors. Heavy duty door bolts, 1.5 inch wide or with a flat section bolt, suit external doors, garage doors and gates. Fit a 6 or 8 inch bolt at the top and bottom of full height doors.

Brass, Chrome and Nickel Door Bolts

Brass door bolts come in bright polished brass, brushed satin brass and antique brass. For a modern look, see chrome door bolts or shop by exact finish: polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, matt bronze, polished chrome, satin chrome, satin nickel, polished nickel. Choose the same finish as your door handles, hinges and other door furniture.

Door Bolt Questions

What is the difference between a straight and a cranked door bolt?
A straight door bolt is used where the door closes flush with the frame, so the bolt and keep sit on the same flat surface. A cranked or necked door bolt has a step in the neck so the keep can be fixed to a frame at a different level, as on most rebated doors and stable doors.

What size door bolt do I need?
A 2 or 3 inch bolt suits cupboards and cabinets, a 4 inch bolt suits most internal and bathroom doors, and a 6 or 8 inch bolt suits external doors, garage doors and the top and bottom of double doors. Check the width of the door stile so the bolt fits.

Which bolts do I need for French doors?
The fixed leaf of French doors or double doors is usually secured with a flush bolt at the top and bottom, recessed into the door. An espagnolette bolt does the same job from one central knob and is surface fixed.

What is the difference between a barrel bolt and a flat bolt?
A barrel bolt has a round bolt that slides in a round barrel, the most common type of door bolt. A flat bolt has a rectangular bolt for a slimmer, more architectural look.

Are Heritage Brass door bolts solid brass?
Yes. Every Heritage Brass door bolt by M.Marcus is made from solid brass and finished in the same finishes as their door handles, so bolts, handles and hinges match on every door.

How to Choose a Door Bolt

1. Pick the type: a round barrel bolt for most doors, a flat door bolt for a slimmer look, flush bolts or an espagnolette bolt for French doors, or a slide bolt for cupboards.

2. Straight or cranked: choose straight door bolts where the door closes flush with the frame, and cranked door bolts where the door is rebated or sits back in the frame.

3. Choose the size: small door bolts of 2 to 4 inch for cupboards and internal doors, or heavy duty door bolts of 6 to 8 inch for external doors and double doors.

4. Match the finish: choose the same finish as your door handles. Brass door bolts come in polished, satin and antique brass, or choose chrome door bolts, satin nickel, polished nickel or matt bronze.

Door Bolt Questions

What is a tower bolt?

Tower bolt is another name for a barrel bolt: a round bolt that slides in a barrel fixed to the door and shoots into a keep on the frame. Heritage Brass make them in straight and necked (cranked) patterns.

How many bolts do I need on a door?

Most internal doors need one bolt. External doors, garage doors and the fixed leaf of double doors are usually fitted with two, one near the top and one near the bottom.

Can I fit a door bolt to a uPVC or composite door?

Heritage Brass bolts are designed for timber doors and frames. For uPVC and composite doors, check with the door maker first, as screws can damage the reinforcement and affect the warranty.

Will brass door bolts tarnish?

Polished and satin brass are lacquered to slow tarnishing, so clean them with a soft damp cloth and avoid brass polish. Antique brass and matt bronze are designed to age, and polished nickel develops a gentle patina unless buffed.

Are Heritage Brass door bolts suitable for fire doors?

Surface bolts are generally not fitted to fire doors that must self close. Check your door specification, or contact us and we will help you choose the right ironmongery.
