How Sash Stops Work

A sash stop is fitted into the side of the upper sash or the frame, just above the meeting rail. With the stop engaged, the lower sash can only be raised as far as the stop, so the window can be left open for secure ventilation. Disengage the stop and the window opens fully for cleaning and maintenance. Fitting them roughly 100mm above the closed position is a common rule of thumb for a safe ventilation gap.

Sash Window Stops FAQ

What are sash window stops?

Sash window stops, also called sash stoppers or sash restrictors, are small bolts fitted into the frame or sash of a sliding sash window. When engaged they stop the sashes sliding past each other, so the window can only open a limited distance or cannot be opened at all.

How many sash stops do I need?

Most sash windows need one stop on each side, so two per window. Several of our sash stops are sold as a pair, and some are available in packs of four for doing two windows at once.

Do sash stops make a window more secure?

Yes. A sash fastener holds the meeting rails together, but sash stops physically block the sashes from moving. Fitting both is one of the most effective ways to secure a timber sash window while still allowing ventilation.

Can I leave a sash window open with stops fitted?

Yes. Position the stops about 100mm above the closed position and the lower sash can be raised only that far, giving fresh air while keeping the gap too small to climb through.

What if I lose the key for my sash stops?

Replacement keys are available for some locking sash stops in this collection. Check the product description for the key type before ordering.
