Heritage Brass Sash Window Stops

Locking Sash Stops for Timber Sash Windows

Heritage Brass sash window stops are key-operated sash stoppers that let you lock a sliding sash window fully closed or leave it slightly open for secure ventilation. Made in solid brass by M.Marcus, the British hardware manufacturer established in 1940, they are part of the Heritage Brass window furniture range and are supplied as a pair with key.

How Sash Window Stops Work

Each sash stop is a threaded sleeve fitted into the side of the upper sash with a bolt inside. Turn the key one way and the bolt projects, blocking the lower sash so it can only open as far as the stop. Turn it back and the bolt retracts flush so the window opens fully for cleaning or maintenance. Because the sashes cannot slide past each other, stops add real security that a decorative sash fastener alone cannot.

Fitting Sash Stops

Fit one sash stop on each side of the upper sash, positioned above the meeting rail at the height you want the lower sash to stop. Around 100mm above the closed position gives a useful ventilation gap. Drill a hole to the diameter of the sleeve, fit the stop, then close the window and wind the bolt out to check it clears the glass and beading. Our sash window hardware guide explains sash fasteners, stops, lifts and pulleys in more detail.

Pair With Sash Fasteners

For a well-secured window, combine sash stops with a fastener on the meeting rail. Choose from Heritage Brass sash window fasteners, including lockable versions, and finish the window with matching sash lifts and rings. Compare every brand in our sash window stops collection, including Carlisle Brass and From The Anvil.

Sash Stop Finishes

Heritage Brass sash stops are available in eight finishes to match the rest of your sash window furniture: Antique Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Brass, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome and Matt Bronze.

Sash Window Stops FAQ

What is a sash window stop?

A sash window stop is a small key-operated bolt fitted into the side of a sliding sash window. When the bolt is wound out it blocks the sash, so the window can only open a limited distance or cannot be opened at all.

Where do you fit sash stops?

Sash stops are usually fitted in pairs, one on each side of the upper sash, set above the meeting rail at the height you want the lower sash to stop. Fitting them roughly 100mm above the closed position allows a secure ventilation gap.

Do sash stops make a sash window more secure?

Yes. A sash fastener only holds the meeting rails together, while sash stops physically stop the sashes sliding past each other. Using both is one of the most effective ways to secure a timber sash window.

Are sash window stops sold in pairs?

Yes. The Heritage Brass V1108 sash window stop is supplied as a pair with a key, which is the usual quantity for one sash window.

Can I leave a window open with sash stops fitted?

Yes. With the bolts wound out, the lower sash can be raised only as far as the stops, so you get fresh air while the gap stays too small to climb through.
