Heritage Brass Bathroom Thumb Turns

Bathroom Turn and Release Sets to Match Handles on Rose

A Heritage Brass bathroom thumb turn locks a bathroom, en suite or WC door from the inside, and has an emergency release on the outside so the door can be opened with a coin or screwdriver. Each set is made in solid brass by M.Marcus to sit alongside Heritage Brass door handles on rose and mortice knobs in the same finish.

Fitting a Thumb Turn: Locks and Spindles

A thumb turn and release works with a bathroom lock or tubular bathroom deadbolt. A bathroom lock has the latch and privacy bolt in one case, while a tubular deadbolt fits alongside a separate latch. Most Heritage Brass turns use a 5mm spindle and a few use 8mm, so check the spindle size on the product and on your lock. For matching locks, see York bathroom locks and York tubular bathroom deadbolts.

Match Your Handle Range

Several turns are made to match a Heritage Brass handle range, so the rose and turn line up with the lever: square rose, Colonial, Linear, Lisboa and Crystal, Century and Tiffany, Bauhaus low profile and reeded. Prefer the turn built into the handle? Choose a bathroom door handle on backplate.

Bathroom Thumb Turn Questions

Which lock does a bathroom thumb turn need?
A thumb turn and release needs a bathroom lock, which has the latch and privacy bolt in one case, or a tubular bathroom deadbolt fitted next to a separate latch. The turn operates the bolt from the inside and the release opens it from the outside.

What spindle size do Heritage Brass thumb turns use?
Most Heritage Brass bathroom turns use a 5mm spindle, which suits most UK bathroom locks. A few use 8mm, so check the spindle size on the product page and on your lock before ordering.

Do I need an indicator turn?
Indicator turns show red or white outside the door so people can see if the room is in use. They are mostly used in commercial, shared and guest toilets. At home, a standard turn and release is usually all you need.

Which thumb turn is easiest to use?
The V4044 and V4048 easy turn designs have a longer bar, so they need less grip to turn. They suit older people, children and anyone with limited hand strength.

How to Choose a Bathroom Thumb Turn

1. Start with the lock: a thumb turn and release needs a bathroom lock or tubular bathroom deadbolt in the door. Use a bathroom lock where the handles and bolt share one case, or a tubular deadbolt next to a separate latch.

2. Check the spindle: most Heritage Brass turns use a 5mm spindle and a few use 8mm. Make sure the turn and the lock take the same size.

3. Match the handle: pick a round turn for round roses and a square turn for square roses, so the turn lines up with your Heritage Brass door handles on rose on the same door.

4. Think about who will use it: an easy turn thumb turn is easier to grip, and an indicator turn and release shows engaged or vacant outside the door in shared toilets.

Thumb Turn and Release Questions

Can a bathroom door be opened from the outside in an emergency?

Yes. Every Heritage Brass turn and release has a release on the outside that turns with a coin or screwdriver, so the door can be opened if someone is taken ill or a child locks themselves in.

Will a thumb turn fit my existing bathroom lock?

Usually, if the lock takes the same spindle size. Most Heritage Brass turns use a 5mm spindle. Check the size on your lock, or browse bathroom locks and deadbolts to replace it at the same time.

What is the difference between a thumb turn and a privacy bolt?

A thumb turn works the bolt in a bathroom lock or deadbolt. A privacy bolt has its own bolt built in, so no separate lock is needed. See Heritage Brass rack bolts and privacy bolts.
