Lock Door Handles on Backplates – Types, Uses and Buying Guide
Choosing the Right Lock Door Handles on Backplates for Your Doors
Lock door handles on backplates remain one of the most popular ways to secure and style doors in UK homes and commercial buildings. A lock backplate handle combines a lever and keyhole or cylinder cut-out on a single plate, giving a neat, durable solution that works with a wide range of mortice locks, Euro and Oval cylinders and modern multipoint locking systems. In this collection you’ll find lock door handles on backplates for traditional wooden doors, composite and uPVC doors, fire doors and DDA-compliant routes.
Standard 2, 3 & 5 Lever Lock Door Handles
Traditional standard locking door handles are designed to work with mortice sash locks that use a castellated key. These are typically 2 lever locks for internal doors, 3 lever locks for light security applications and 5 lever locks for external doors and higher-security areas. A common UK size is 57mm centres between the spindle and keyhole, which lines up with most standard mortice key sash locks. This style of handle is ideal for period properties, traditional designs and doors where you want a more classic feel while still using reliable lock hardware.
Euro Profile Lock Door Handles
Euro lock door handles are designed for Euro profile cylinders. They’re commonly used on modern external doors and on many commercial projects because the cylinder can easily be upgraded to anti-snap, anti-drill or high-security 3-star options. These handles normally match the same design range as latch and bathroom backplate handles, so you can keep a consistent look throughout the property. The most common centres for Euro profile lock handles are 47.5mm from the Euro cylinder cut-out to the spindle hole, and we stock a full range of Euro profile sash locks to suit.
Oval Profile Lock Door Handles
Although less common on new-builds, Oval lock door handles are still widely used on existing doors and older systems. Oval cylinders work in a similar way to Euro cylinders but with an oval shape. Many manufacturers have gradually moved over to Euro profile systems, so Oval hardware is often used for replacements where customers want to keep the existing lock type. We stock matching Oval profile sash locks to make replacement straightforward.
Multipoint Lock Door Handles
For uPVC and composite doors – and increasingly for timber doors made in joinery workshops – multipoint door handles are the go-to choice. These lock door handles sit on long, narrow backplates (often under 30mm wide) that line up with the multipoint gearbox and hooks or bolts that secure the door in multiple positions. Common centres include 92mm and 70mm, though other options are available. Some multipoint handles are sprung and some are unsprung; when the handle is off the door the lever can usually be rotated upwards to engage the locking points. If you’re unsure about sizes or can’t find a direct replacement, our team can help you match the correct replacement multipoint door handles.
Matching Latch and Bathroom Backplate Handles
Most ranges of door handles on backplate with lock also offer matching passage and bathroom versions so you can coordinate every door. For bathrooms, en-suites and WCs, bathroom door handles on backplates include a turn and release, with an internal thumbturn and external emergency coin slot. These are used with a bathroom lock or, in the case of privacy handles, with a tubular latch. For doors that don’t need locking – such as living rooms, kitchens and some bedrooms – latch door handles on backplates with plain backplates are ideal. For security-sensitive rooms or external doors, lock door handles on backplates with keyholes or cylinders provide the extra protection needed.
Finishes, Styles and Materials
To help you coordinate your scheme, we offer lockable door handles in a broad range of on-trend and classic finishes. Popular choices include polished chrome lock door handles on backplates, satin chrome lock door handles on backplates, polished brass lock door handles on backplates, satin nickel lock door handles on backplates and antique brass lock door handles on backplates. You’ll also find traditional antique black, pewter and beeswax finishes alongside modern matt black and satin brass, making it easy to match other ironmongery around the property.
At the budget end, many handles are made from aluminium or zinc-based alloy, while higher-spec products use brass or stainless steel bases with durable plated or PVD finishes. Sprung backplates help support the lever and are useful when working with older locks or latches that aren’t strongly sprung themselves.
Compatibility, Sizing and Installation Notes
When choosing new backplate door handles with keyhole, it’s important to consider the existing lock or cylinder type, the centres between spindle and keyhole or cylinder, and the overall backplate size. Most mortice lock handles fit 2.5" or 3" lock cases, though deeper casings are available for wider stiles or specific design requirements. For replacement projects, measuring your current handle and lock – including fixing centres and backplate height – will help ensure a clean swap with minimal extra drilling.
If you’re working on a new door, you’ll generally need to order a compatible mortice lock or multipoint lock at the same time as your handles. For additional hardware such as escutcheons, door closers, door bolts, draught seals or security accessories, the Door Furniture Accessories collection is a useful place to complete the specification.
Whether you are a homeowner, joiner, architect or contractor, our team can help you choose door handles with locks that are suitable for fire doors, high-traffic commercial environments and residential properties across the UK.
