Heritage Brass - Polished Brass Hinges

Polished Brass Door Hinges, Parliament Hinges and Cabinet Hinges

Heritage Brass polished brass hinges are 19 solid brass hinges by M.Marcus, from heavy 4 inch door hinges to tiny cabinet hinges, finished to match Heritage Brass polished brass door handles, knobs and door furniture. Polished brass hinges are the traditional choice for period panel doors with brass furniture.

Hinge Types in Polished Brass

  • Washered butt hinges: double phosphor washered hinges and phosphor washered hinges in 3 x 2, 4 x 2 5/8 and 4 x 3 inch, plus steel washered hinges in 3 x 2 and 4 x 2 3/8 inch, for internal doors.
  • Thrust bearing hinges with a steel pin: 4 x 3 and 4 x 4 inch, for heavy, busy and external doors.
  • Parliament hinges: 4 x 2 x 4, 4 x 3 x 5 and 4 x 4 x 6 inch, which throw the door clear of deep architraves and skirting so it opens back flat.
  • Plain brass butt hinges: 4 x 2 3/8 inch, plus small brass hinges in 3 x 1 5/8, 2 1/2 x 1 3/8 and 2 x 1 1/8 inch for cupboards and joinery.
  • Cabinet hinges in 1 and 1 1/2 inch for boxes and furniture.

Hinge sizes are length x open width. Most internal doors hang on 3 or 4 inch hinges, and heavier doors on three 4 inch hinges. Browse every finish in Heritage Brass hinges, or by use: internal door hinges and front and external door hinges.

The Lacquered Polished Brass Finish

Polished brass is one of the M.Marcus lacquered finishes, sealed with a clear lacquer. All lacquered finishes will eventually break down over time, more quickly on products exposed to the weather, particularly in coastal areas and in polluted environments. Regularly remove dirt and watermarks with a non-abrasive cloth, and on external fittings a light coat of non-abrasive wax will protect the lacquer and could extend its life. Do not use metal cleaners or aerosol sprays, as these will damage the lacquer. The life of the lacquer is beyond the manufacturer's control, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Polished Brass Hinge Questions

What is the difference between phosphor and steel washered hinges?
Both have washers between the knuckles so the hinge runs smoothly. The difference is the washer material, phosphor bronze or steel.

When do I need a parliament hinge?
When the door needs to open back past a deep architrave, skirting or panelling. The wide leaves carry the door clear so it can swing right back.

How many hinges does a door need?
Most internal doors use two hinges, often called a pair. Heavy solid or external doors are usually hung on three, also called one and a half pairs.

Will polished brass hinges match my polished brass handles?
Yes. Heritage Brass uses the same lacquered polished brass finish across its hinges, door handles, door furniture and window furniture.
