Heritage Brass - Polished Brass

Polished Brass Door Handles, Door Knobs and Brass Ironmongery

Heritage Brass polished brass is the classic bright gold finish of British ironmongery, made by M.Marcus in solid brass across almost 1,000 door handles, door knobs, front door furniture, window fittings, kitchen handles, hinges and accessories. It suits Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes, black or heritage coloured front doors, and painted panel doors inside, and it is just as striking with dark kitchens and modern interiors.

Polished Brass Door Handles and Knobs

Shop all polished brass door handles and knobs, including brass door handles on backplates in latch, lock, bathroom and euro versions, polished brass door handles on rose and polished brass mortice door knobs. For bathrooms, add polished brass thumb turns, and for entrance and commercial doors see the polished brass door pull handles.

Polished Brass Front Door Furniture

A polished brass door knocker, letterbox, centre door knob and house numbers are the traditional way to finish a period front door. Add matching escutcheons, finger plates, door stops and flush pulls, or browse every polished brass door furniture accessory and the full polished brass door furniture range.

Polished Brass Kitchen Handles and Cupboard Knobs

Brass kitchen handles bring warmth to dark green, navy and painted Shaker kitchens. Choose from polished brass cabinet pull handles, polished brass cupboard knobs, cup handles and edge pulls, or see all polished brass kitchen and cabinet hardware.

Windows, Hinges and Accessories

Finish the room with polished brass window furniture, including casement fasteners and stays, hang doors on polished brass hinges, and add polished brass coat hooks, door bolts and the rest of the polished brass accessories.

Caring for the Lacquered Polished Brass Finish

Heritage Brass polished brass is one of the M.Marcus lacquered finishes, sealed with a clear lacquer so it keeps its shine without polishing. All lacquered finishes will eventually break down over time, more quickly on products exposed to the weather, particularly in coastal areas and in polluted environments. Regularly remove dirt and watermarks with a non-abrasive cloth. On front doors and other external fittings, a light coat of non-abrasive wax will protect the lacquer and could extend its life, and a periodic light oiling of springs and moving parts helps too. Do not use metal cleaners or aerosol sprays, as these will damage the lacquer. The life of the lacquer is beyond the manufacturer's control, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Polished, Satin or Unlacquered Brass?

Polished brass is bright and reflective. For a softer, brushed gold look, see Heritage Brass satin brass. For brass that is left uncoated to darken and age naturally, see Heritage Brass unlacquered brass. Whichever you choose, use one finish throughout a room, as they look different side by side.

Polished Brass Locks and Latches

Heritage Brass door handles are sold without locks or latches. For mortice locks, tubular latches and bathroom locks with a matching brass faceplate, see York Security polished brass locks and latches, or the Heritage Brass polished brass thumbturns and privacy locks. See every other finish in our Heritage Brass finishes collection.

Polished Brass Questions

Is Heritage Brass polished brass solid brass?
Yes. Every product is made by M.Marcus from solid brass, polished to a bright finish and protected with a clear lacquer.

Will polished brass door handles tarnish?
The clear lacquer protects the shine, but all lacquered finishes eventually break down, sooner outdoors and near the coast.

Can I use Brasso or metal polish on lacquered brass?
No. Metal cleaners and aerosol sprays damage the lacquer. Wipe the handles with a non-abrasive cloth instead.

Do Heritage Brass door handles come with locks or latches?
No. They are sold without locks or latches. See the York Security polished brass range by M.Marcus for locks and latches with a matching faceplate.

Where Polished Brass Works Best

The period front door. Polished brass is the traditional finish for Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian front doors. A typical set is a door knocker, a letterbox, a centre door knob or pull handle, brass house numbers and an escutcheon for the key, all in the same finish.

Inside the house. Brass mortice knobs or lever handles on rose suit panelled internal doors, with finger plates to protect the paintwork. Handles on backplates put the keyhole, bathroom turn or euro cut-out on the plate, which is useful when replacing old handles and covering previous fixing holes.

The modern brass kitchen. Polished brass kitchen handles and cupboard knobs look striking on dark green, navy and black painted kitchens, where the bright gold stands out against the colour.

Care, locks and other brass finishes

Living with Polished Brass

Front doors and the weather. The clear lacquer protects the shine, but on external doors it breaks down sooner, especially in polluted environments, and fastest of all near the coast. Wipe off dirt regularly with a non-abrasive cloth, apply a light coat of non-abrasive wax, and lightly oil the springs on knockers and letterboxes.

Living by the sea? Lacquered polished brass will break down on coastal front doors. For external fittings near the sea we recommend Grade 316 marine stainless steel, or unlacquered brass, which has no lacquer to fail and can be polished back with a brass polish such as Brasso.

Locks with a brass faceplate. Heritage Brass handles are sold without locks or latches. The York Security polished brass locks and latches have a polished brass faceplate to match the handles, so the door edge matches too.

Polished, satin or unlacquered? If you want a softer brushed gold, see satin brass. If you want brass that darkens and ages from day one, see unlacquered brass.

See it in person. Heritage Brass polished brass is on display at our Kendal and Carlisle showrooms. Trade Door Handles is part of T.H. Wiggans Ironmongery, trading since 1976.

More Polished Brass Questions

What do I need for a polished brass front door?

Usually a door knocker, a letterbox, a centre door knob or pull handle, house numbers and a key escutcheon, plus a lock with a polished brass faceplate from the York Security range.

Is polished brass suitable for a house near the sea?

Lacquered polished brass is not the best choice for coastal homes. Salt air breaks the lacquer down much sooner, and once it fails the brass underneath will tarnish. For external fittings near the sea we recommend Grade 316 marine stainless steel, or unlacquered brass, which has no lacquer to fail and can be cleaned back with a brass polish such as Brasso.

Should I choose polished or satin brass for my kitchen?

Polished brass is bright and reflective and makes a statement on dark painted units. Satin brass is a softer, brushed gold that shows fewer fingerprints. Choose one for the whole kitchen.

Will new polished brass match the old brass in my house?

Old brass that has lost its lacquer usually looks darker and more mellow, while new lacquered polished brass is bright. If you want to match aged brass, look at unlacquered brass instead.

Do you sell polished brass hinges to match?

Yes. Heritage Brass polished brass hinges include double phosphor washered, thrust bearing, parliament and cabinet hinges.
