4 Inch and 5 Inch Long Backset Door Latches

On older panelled doors, wide-stile hardwood doors and doors fitted with large centre knobs or big lever roses, a standard 2.5 or 3 inch latch places the handle too close to the edge. These 4 inch (102mm case) and 5 inch (127mm case) tubular latches from M.Marcus move the spindle further into the door so the handle sits in proportion and your hand clears the frame.

Typical uses

• Victorian and Edwardian four and six panel doors with wide stiles
• Large diameter mortice knobs and rim knobs replaced with mortice fittings
• Glazed doors where the handle must clear the glazing bead
• Heavy oak and hardwood doors paired with unsprung levers

Measuring for a long backset latch

Measure from the edge of the door to the centre of where you want the spindle to sit. A 4 inch latch gives a backset of around 82mm and a 5 inch latch around 107mm. Check the stile is wide enough to take the full case length before you bore.
