Hinge Types in Antique Brass

• Phosphor washered hinges: 3 x 2, 4 x 2 5/8 and 4 x 3 inch, plus double phosphor washered hinges in the same sizes, for smooth everyday use on internal doors.
• Thrust bearing hinges with a steel pin: 4 x 3 and 4 x 4 inch, for heavier and busier doors.
• Parliament hinges: 4 x 2 x 4, 4 x 3 x 5 and 4 x 4 x 6 inch. These project the door clear of deep architraves, skirting or panelling so it can open back fully.
• Plain brass butt hinges: 4 x 2 3/8 inch, plus small brass hinges in 2 x 1 1/8, 2 1/2 x 1 3/8 and 3 x 1 5/8 inch for cupboards and small joinery.
• Cabinet hinges: 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch, for boxes, cabinets and furniture.

Butt hinge sizes are given as length x open width. Most internal doors take 3 inch or 4 inch hinges, and heavier doors are usually hung on three 4 inch hinges. See every finish in Heritage Brass hinges, or browse internal door hinges and front and external door hinges.

The Antique Brass Finish

Heritage Brass polishes the brass and applies a bronze patina over the whole surface. Its polishers then use soft brushes to remove some of the patina and expose the brass below, so each hinge has its own variance of shades. A clear electrophoretic lacquer is applied to preserve the final appearance.

Antique Brass Hinge Questions

What is a parliament hinge?
A parliament hinge has wide leaves that project the door away from the frame, so it clears deep architraves, skirting or panelling and can open back fully.

What size hinge do I need for an internal door?
Most internal doors take 3 inch or 4 inch butt hinges. Use 4 inch hinges, and three per door, for heavier solid doors.

What is the difference between washered and thrust bearing hinges?
Washered hinges have phosphor bronze washers between the knuckles for a smooth action on everyday doors. Thrust bearing hinges carry the door weight on a bearing and suit heavier, busier doors.

Will antique brass hinges match my antique brass door handles?
Yes. Heritage Brass uses the same antique brass finish across its hinges, door handles, door furniture and window furniture. As it is brushed back by hand, expect slight variation in shade between pieces.
