The Satin Brass Look Through the House

A softer gold. Brushing the surface takes the mirror shine off solid brass and mellows its colour, so satin brass, or brushed brass, reads as a warm, quiet gold rather than a bright one. It shows fewer fingerprints than polished brass, which makes it a practical choice for kitchen handles, cupboard knobs and busy internal doors.

Brushed brass kitchen handles. There are over 170 satin brass cabinet handles and drawer pulls in around 40 designs, from slim Metro, Square Metro, Bauhaus and Contour bars to Phoenix, Apollo, Hexagon, Durham and Colonial, plus knurled, hammered and T-bar versions. Fixing centres run from 76mm to 480mm, so you can shop by size: 96mm, 128mm, 160mm, 192mm and 320mm.

Brushed brass knobs and cup handles. Around 115 satin brass cabinet knobs and cupboard knobs come in disc, reeded, knurled, hexagon, Victorian, beehive, Florence, Venetian and hammered designs, mostly in 32mm and 38mm. For Shaker drawers, choose from 14 brushed brass cup handles including Hampshire, Shropshire, Military, Crescent, Half Moon, Warwickshire and Cheshire, or fit satin brass edge pulls for a near handleless look.

Brushed brass door handles. Lever door handles on rose include Bauhaus, Phoenix, Athena, Lincoln, Windsor, Tiffany and the reeded Roma, Charlbury, Sutton and Bridgetown designs. Door handles on backplates include Savoy, Lisboa, Algarve, Howard, Diplomat, Delta and Centaur in latch, lock, euro and bathroom versions, plus the modern 200mm plate range. For a period look, satin brass mortice knobs include Mayfair, Kensington, Hampstead, Chelsea, Richmond, Whitehall and Westminster.

Where it works. Satin brass suits soft contemporary and mid century interiors, oak and walnut joinery, and painted kitchens in greens, blues, greys and creams. It also adds a modern twist to Victorian and Edwardian homes, and pairs well with brushed brass taps, lighting and mirrors.

One finish for the whole house. Start with the kitchen, then carry the same brushed brass through to the door handles and knobs, window furniture, coat hooks and shelf brackets.

Hinges, locks, front doors, care and other finishes

Living with Satin Brass

Brushed brass hinges. Match the door handles with satin brass hinges: phosphor and double phosphor washered butt hinges in 3 and 4 inch sizes for internal doors, thrust bearing hinges for heavy doors, parliament hinges to clear deep architraves, and small brass hinges for cupboards.

Locks with a matching faceplate. Heritage Brass handles are sold without locks or latches. The York Security satin brass locks and latches include tubular latches, sash locks, deadlocks and bathroom locks to go behind satin brass handles, so the door edge matches too.

The front door. Finish an entrance with a satin brass door knocker, letterbox, centre door knob and brushed brass house numbers and letters, with matching escutcheons and door pull handles.

Looking after satin brass. The clear lacquer protects the brushed finish. Wipe off dirt and watermarks with a soft, non-abrasive cloth, dry handles in kitchens and bathrooms after cleaning, and never use metal cleaners, aerosol sprays or harsh kitchen sprays, which damage the lacquer. On external doors, add a light coat of non-abrasive wax and lightly oil the springs and moving parts.

Outside and by the sea. The lacquer breaks down sooner on external doors, and much sooner in coastal areas and polluted environments. For coastal front doors we recommend Grade 316 marine stainless steel or unlacquered brass, which can be polished back.

Other brass finishes. Compare satin brass with bright polished brass, the deeper antique brass, or every option in our Heritage Brass finishes. Keep to one finish in each room, as they look different side by side.

Expert help and showrooms. Heritage Brass satin brass is on display at our Kendal and Carlisle showrooms. Trade Door Handles is part of T.H. Wiggans Ironmongery, trading since 1976. More Satin Brass Questions

Does brushed brass show fingerprints?

Less than polished brass. The brushed surface hides light marks, and a wipe with a soft, non-abrasive cloth keeps it clean.

Will satin brass handles match my brushed brass taps?

Brushed brass tones vary from maker to maker, so an exact match is not guaranteed. If you can, compare a sample or visit our Kendal or Carlisle showroom before ordering a whole kitchen.

Can I mix satin brass and polished brass?

They look different side by side, so it is best to keep to one finish in each room. Some people use polished brass on the front door and satin brass inside.

Can I use satin brass on a front door?

Yes, but the lacquer breaks down sooner outdoors. Wipe it regularly, apply a light coat of non-abrasive wax and oil the springs. Near the sea, choose 316 stainless steel or unlacquered brass instead.

Do you sell satin brass hinges?

Yes. Satin brass hinges include phosphor and double phosphor washered hinges, thrust bearing hinges, parliament hinges and small brass hinges.
