Brushed Brass Window Fittings for Sash, Casement and Espag Windows

Heritage Brass satin brass window furniture by M.Marcus is 41 solid brass fittings for sash, casement, espagnolette and fanlight windows. Where polished brass gives a bright mirror shine, satin brass is brushed to a muted, mellow gold with a soft sheen, so it suits both restored period windows and new timber windows in a modern interior. Every fitting matches Heritage Brass satin brass door handles and knobs and the rest of the satin brass range.

Choosing a Pattern

Most people pick one pattern and use it on every window. The ball pattern fasteners and stays have a rounded end that suits Victorian and Edwardian houses, the spoon pattern has a flat, flared end typical of Georgian and cottage windows, and the reeded pattern carries fine lines that match reeded door handles and cabinet knobs. In satin brass the reeded design picks up the brushed grain of the finish particularly well.

Caring for the Lacquered Satin Brass Finish

Satin brass is one of the M.Marcus lacquered finishes: the brass is brushed to a soft, even grain and sealed with a clear lacquer. All lacquered finishes will eventually break down over time, and this happens more frequently on products exposed to the climate, particularly in coastal areas and in polluted environments. Regularly removing dirt and watermarks with a non-abrasive cloth will help maintain the life of the finish, and on products used externally a non-abrasive light wax coating will protect the lacquer and could extend its life. Do not use metal cleaners or aerosol sprays, as these will damage the lacquer. The life of the lacquer is beyond the manufacturer's control and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Satin Brass Window Furniture Questions

Is satin brass the same as brushed brass?
Yes. Satin brass is often called brushed brass. The brass is brushed to a fine, even grain and then lacquered, giving a soft sheen rather than a mirror shine.

Do I need left or right hand espagnolette handles?
Stand inside the room facing the window. If the hinges are on the left the window needs a left hand handle, and if the hinges are on the right it needs a right hand handle.

What size casement stay should I choose?
Choose the longest stay that fits comfortably on the bottom rail of the opening casement. Small casements usually take an 8 inch stay, standard windows a 10 inch, and wide windows a 12 inch.

What is a weather stripped casement fastener?
It is a version of the casement fastener made for windows fitted with weather stripping or draught seals. Choose it if your casements have seals fitted.

Can satin brass window furniture be used on the outside of a building?
It is mostly fitted indoors on the window frame, but where fittings face damp or sea air the lacquer will break down sooner. Wipe them down regularly and apply a light coat of non-abrasive wax.
