What fittings does a fanlight window need?
Most fanlights need a fanlight catch to hold the window shut and a stay to hold it open. If the window is too high to reach, add a pole hook so it can be worked with a window pole.

What does a fanlight catch do?
A fanlight catch holds a fanlight or top hung window shut. It fits on the frame and the opening edge of the window, so the window closes firmly and does not rattle.

What is the difference between a quadrant stay and a roller arm stay?
Both hold a fanlight or top hung window open. The quadrant stay has a curved quadrant shaped arm, while the roller arm stay has a straight arm with a roller. Heritage Brass makes a 147mm quadrant stay and roller arm stays in 150mm and 254mm.

How do I open a high fanlight window?
Fit a pole hook to the end of a window pole, then use it to reach and work the catch and stay on a window that is too high to reach by hand.

What finishes are Heritage Brass fanlight fittings made in?
The fanlight catch and stays come in eight finishes: polished brass, satin brass, antique brass, matt bronze, polished chrome, satin chrome, polished nickel and satin nickel. The pole hook comes in polished brass, antique brass, polished chrome and satin nickel. They are not made in matt black.

How to Choose Fanlight Window Fittings

1. Check how the fanlight opens. Most fanlights are hinged at the top or the bottom and tilt open. Look at where the hinges are, as this tells you which edge the catch and stay go on.

2. Hold it shut. A fanlight catch holds the window closed so it does not rattle.

3. Hold it open. Choose a quadrant stay (147mm) with a curved arm, or a roller arm stay with a straight arm in 150mm or 254mm. Measure the window edge where the stay will fit before you choose the length.

4. Plan for reach. If the fanlight is above head height, add a window pole hook so it can be opened and closed from the floor with a window pole.

5. Match the finish. The catch and stays come in eight finishes, from polished brass and antique brass to satin chrome. The pole hook comes in polished brass, antique brass, polished chrome and satin nickel. None of the fanlight fittings are made in matt black.

Fixing, matching and care

Fixing. Each fitting is solid brass and comes with fixing screws. Check the product drawing for the sizes before you order, and hold the fitting in place to mark the screw holes before you drill.

Caring for brass window fittings. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry it off. Avoid abrasive cleaners and metal polish on lacquered, chrome and nickel finishes. Windows often get condensation, so wipe the fittings down regularly.

What is a fanlight window?

A fanlight is a small window above a door or above a larger window. Most are hinged at the top or bottom so they tilt open for ventilation.

Are Heritage Brass fanlight fittings solid brass?
