Sash Fastener Designs

Sash Window Furniture Questions

What fittings does a sash window need?
Most sliding sash windows need a sash fastener on the meeting rails to hold the window shut, and two sash lifts on the bottom rail of the lower sash to raise it. Add a pair of locking sash stops if you want to lock the window slightly open.

What is the difference between Brighton, Fitch and hook plate sash fasteners?
All three fit on the meeting rails where the two sashes overlap and hold the window shut. A Brighton fastener closes with a screw action, a Fitch fastener uses a curved hook and cam that pulls the meeting rails tight as you turn it, and a hook plate fastener (also called a quadrant fastener) has an arm that swings into a hooked keep. Most Heritage Brass fasteners come in a standard and a lockable version.

Are lockable sash fasteners a security lock?
The lockable Heritage Brass fasteners lock with a key, so the sashes cannot be released from inside without it. They are not insurance rated window locks, so for ground floor or easily reached windows add a pair of locking sash stops as well.

What do sash stops do?
Sash stops fit to the frame or sash and limit how far the sash can slide, so you can leave the window open a little for air without it being opened further. The Heritage Brass locking sash stops come as a pair with a key.

How many sash lifts do I need?
Most lower sashes use two sash lifts on the bottom rail, one towards each side, so the sash lifts evenly. Narrow sashes can use a single lift in the centre.

Will a Heritage Brass sash fastener fit my window?
Check the width of the meeting rails and the space either side of the centre where the sashes meet. The narrow Brighton fastener is only 12mm wide, so it suits slim meeting rails where space is tight. If you are unsure, send us a photo of your window and we will advise.
