Casement Window Furniture Questions

What fittings does a casement window need?
Most timber casement windows need a casement fastener to hold the window shut and a casement stay, used with a stay pin, to hold it open. Add a locking pin if you want to lock the stay with the window slightly open.

Are Heritage Brass casement fasteners left or right handed?
No. Every Heritage Brass casement fastener has a pivoted handle that suits both left hand and right hand opening windows, so you do not need to choose a hand.

What is a weather stripped casement fastener?
It is a fastener made for windows fitted with draught seals. The seal stops the casement closing tight to the frame, so the fastener is designed to reach further and still pull the window shut. The reeded V894 and V894L, the lockable ball end V1008L and the lockable wedge V1005W are all suitable for weather stripped windows.

What size casement stay do I need?
Heritage Brass casement stays come in 8 inch (203mm), 10 inch (254mm) and 12 inch (305mm). Measure the bottom rail of the opening casement and choose the longest stay that sits neatly along it when the window is closed. Longer stays give more opening positions, so wider windows usually suit 10 or 12 inch.

Are the lockable casement fasteners security locks?
The lockable versions lock with a key so the window cannot be opened from inside without it, which is useful for child safety and peace of mind. M.Marcus notes that the lockable ball end and wedge pattern fasteners are not security locks, so check your insurance requirements if you need an approved window lock.

How to Choose Casement Window Furniture

1. Check the window. A casement window is hinged at the side and opens outwards. The fastener goes on the opening edge, opposite the hinges, and the stay goes on the bottom rail. If the window has a locking bar running up the opening edge, it is an espagnolette window and needs espagnolette window furniture instead.

2. Look for draught seals. If there is a rubber or brush seal between the window and the frame, choose a weather stripped casement fastener. A standard fastener may not reach far enough to close the window against the seal.

3. Measure for the stay. Measure the bottom rail of the opening window. Heritage Brass stays come in 8 inch (203mm), 10 inch (254mm) and 12 inch (305mm) lengths. Choose the longest that sits neatly along the rail, as a longer stay gives more opening positions. For an opening you can set anywhere, choose a sliding casement stay.

4. Decide on security. For ground floor and easy to reach windows, choose lockable casement fasteners and add casement stay locking pins so the window can be locked shut or slightly open for air.

5. Pick a style and stick to it. Use the same pattern for the fastener and stay on every window: ball end, spoon pattern or reeded.

Fitting, finishes and care

Fitting and Caring for Casement Window Furniture

Fitting the stay. Fix the stay to the bottom rail of the opening window with the screws supplied. Then fit the stay pin to the frame where the stay sits level with the window closed, so the stay drops onto it cleanly. If the window sash sits flush with the frame and there is no room for a standard pin, use a cranked casement stay pin.

Fitting the fastener. Fit the fastener on the opening edge of the window and the hook plate or mortice plate on the frame so the handle pulls the window tight when it is turned. Every Heritage Brass casement fastener has a pivoted handle, so the same fastener works on left and right hand windows. Check the alignment with the window closed before you drill.

Choosing a finish. Match the finish to your door handles and the rest of the room. Choose polished brass or antique brass for period homes, satin chrome or satin nickel for a modern look, unlacquered brass for a finish that ages naturally, or matt black for a traditional ironwork look.

Caring for casement window furniture. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry it off. Avoid abrasive cleaners and metal polish on lacquered, chrome and nickel finishes. Casement fittings face the weather when the window is open, so wipe them down regularly, especially on windows that get condensation.

Is a window stay the same as a casement stay?

Yes. Casement stay, window stay and peg stay all describe the arm on the bottom rail that holds a casement window open. Heritage Brass makes them in ball end, spoon and reeded patterns, plus a sliding stay.

How many stays and fasteners does a casement window need?

Most opening casements need one fastener and one stay. Tall windows sometimes have two fasteners, one high and one low, so check the window you are replacing before ordering.

Which side of the window does the fastener go on?

The fastener goes on the opening edge of the window, opposite the hinges, with its plate fixed to the frame. Heritage Brass casement fasteners have a pivoted handle that works on both left and right hand windows.

Should I choose a hook plate or a mortice plate?

A hook plate is the usual choice for flush frames and screws to the face of the frame. A mortice plate is set into the frame and suits recessed or stepped windows. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the window and we will advise.

What is the difference between ball end, spoon and reeded casement furniture?

They are the shape of the handle end and the end of the stay. Ball end has a round ball, spoon pattern has a flat rounded spoon, and reeded has a fluted, ribbed finish. All three suit period homes, and reeded also works well in contemporary interiors.

What is a wedge pattern casement fastener?

It is a slim, wedge shaped handle. The Heritage Brass wedge pattern fastener is lockable with a key, and there is a weather stripped version for windows with draught seals.

Can I lock a casement window slightly open?

Yes. Fit a casement stay locking pin in place of the standard stay pin. Set the window at the opening you want, lock the stay onto the pin, and the window cannot be pushed open further until you unlock it.

Can I fit Heritage Brass casement furniture to a uPVC window?

These casement fasteners and stays are designed for timber windows. For uPVC windows, choose Heritage Brass uPVC replacement window handles, which are made to fit uPVC window gear.

Will unlacquered brass casement furniture tarnish?

Yes, by design. Unlacquered brass has no protective coating, so it darkens and develops a natural patina, especially on windows exposed to the weather. Polish it with brass polish to keep it bright, or leave it to age.

Can I match my casement furniture to my door handles?
