Finishes to Match Your Door Furniture

Most York Security locks and latches are offered in Antique Brass, Matt Bronze, Polished Brass, Satin Brass, Matt Black, Polished Chrome / Polished Nickel and Satin Chrome / Satin Nickel. The combined chrome and nickel faceplates are designed to sit comfortably with either handle finish. Night latches are also offered in White.

Choosing the Right York Lock

M.Marcus handles are sold without locks or latches, so pair the lock to the handle type: a tubular latch with latch handles, a sash lock with standard profile lever lock handles, a euro sash lock with euro lock handles, and a bathroom lock with bathroom handles. For replacements, measure the backset (door edge to the centre of the spindle) and the faceplate size of the existing lock before you order. Most locks and latches are only made in plain nickel or brass, which looks out of place behind antique brass or matt black door handles. York Security is different. Every York tubular latch, mortice sash lock, bathroom lock and night latch is finished to match the M.Marcus and Heritage Brass door furniture it sits behind, so the edge of the door matches the handle.

How to Choose a York Tubular Latch, Sash Lock or Night Latch

Standard or heavy duty tubular latch? A standard York tubular latch is lightly sprung for handles with their own return spring. Choose a heavy duty (architectural) tubular latch for unsprung lever handles, mortice knobs and heavier handles. Most lever handles use a 2.5 inch latch, while knobs usually need 3 inch to keep your knuckles clear of the frame. See all York tubular latches.

Which mortice sash lock do I need? For internal doors a 3 lever mortice sash lock is the usual choice. For front and back doors most insurers ask for a BS3621 5 lever sash lock. If your front door has a night latch, fit a BS3621 deadlock below it for insurance-rated security.

Bathroom lock or bathroom deadbolt? Bathroom handles on a backplate take a York bathroom lock with 57mm centres. Lever handles on rose or knobs use a plain latch plus a York bathroom deadbolt and a matching thumb turn.

Replacing an existing lock? Measure the backset (door edge to the centre of the spindle or keyhole) and the faceplate size before you order. If you are unsure, contact our team with a photo of the old lock and your handles, and we will check the size, centres and finish for you before you buy.

Do M.Marcus door handles come with a latch or lock?

No. M.Marcus handles are sold without locks or latches, so choose a York latch or lock to suit the handle type: latch, standard profile lock, euro lock or bathroom.

Which York lock should I use on an external door?

Many home insurers ask for a BS3621 British Standard lock on external doors. York BS3621 5 lever sash locks and deadlocks are made for this. Check your own policy wording before you buy.

What is the difference between standard and architectural tubular latches?

Standard York tubular latches are lightly sprung for sprung handles and knobs. Architectural latches have stronger springs to support unsprung and heavier lever handles.

Can I match the lock finish to my handles?
