How to Choose Kitchen Cupboard Handles and Knobs

1. Pick a finish first. Look at your door handles, taps and lighting. If you already have, or plan, Heritage Brass door handles or window furniture, choose the same finish for the kitchen, such as satin brass kitchen handles with satin brass door handles.

2. Choose handles, knobs or both. Kitchen cupboard handles are easy to grip on tall doors and heavy drawers. Cupboard knobs suit wall units and small drawers. Many kitchens use knobs on doors and cup handles or pull handles on drawers in the same design.

3. Measure the fixing centres. For replacement handles, measure between the centres of the two existing holes and choose the same size, so there is no new drilling. For new doors, 96mm to 160mm suits most wall and base units.

4. Pick a style to suit the kitchen. Knurled and hammered handles add texture, T-bar handles and Metro bars suit modern kitchens, and traditional and Victorian designs suit period and Shaker kitchens.

5. Do not forget the extras. Cupboard catches keep doors shut on dressers and larders, flush pulls suit sliding doors, and edge pulls give a near handleless look.

One manufacturer, one finish. Caring for the finish. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry off. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can damage lacquered, chrome and nickel finishes. Unlacquered brass will darken with use and can be polished back if you prefer the shine.

Can I mix cupboard knobs and pull handles in one kitchen?

Yes. A common approach is knobs on wall cupboards and pull handles or cup handles on drawers. Choosing the same finish, and the same design where it is made as a knob and a handle, keeps the kitchen looking planned.

Which handles suit a Shaker kitchen?

Cup handles, round knobs and simple bar handles are popular choices for Shaker kitchens. Antique brass, satin brass and matt bronze suit painted Shaker doors well.

What is the difference between polished nickel and polished chrome?

Both are bright, shiny finishes. Polished nickel has a slightly warmer tone, while polished chrome is cooler and bluer. Both are available across Heritage Brass door, window and cabinet hardware.

Which finish shows fingerprints least?

Satin and matt finishes, such as satin brass, satin nickel, satin chrome and matt bronze, generally show fingerprints and marks less than polished finishes.

Can I use these handles on wardrobes and bathroom units?

Yes. Heritage Brass cabinet hardware suits wardrobes, bedroom furniture, dressers and bathroom vanity units as well as kitchens. Longer pull handles are easier to use on tall wardrobe doors.

What are dual finish cabinet handles?

Dual finish designs pair matt bronze with satin brass or satin nickel, for example a knob with a contrasting rose or a pull handle with a contrasting plate.

Are the handles sold singly?

Most Heritage Brass cabinet handles and knobs are sold individually, so order one for each door or drawer. Check the unit of sale on each product page.
